Pre Christmas blues for defeated Girls
This was a disappointing end to the year with a very below par performance
It was unfortunate that Guildford could not field a full team so the game was played as 7v7. Both sides made a sluggish start but it was Haslemere who opened the scoring when a Guildford defender deflected a cross into her own goal. This was about as good as it got for Haslemere as their opponents began to dominate in all areas of the pitch. Guildford were first to the ball and their movement and passing caused Haslemere all sorts of problems. When Haslemere did get the ball the passing was wayward and possession was all to often gifted back to the opposition. It was no surprise when a mix up in the defence from a harmless looking throw in was slotted home for an equalising goal. The second was not long coming when Maisy was well beaten at the near post by a fine shot from just inside the area. The half finished with Haslemere behind 2 - 1.
The performance improved in the second half but the movement off the ball and passing was still letting Haslemere down. Neither team really had any worthwhile efforts on goal and Guildford easily held out for a deserved win.
Katya worked very hard tracking back and making some great interceptions and Lily made some impressive breaks, especially when she was moved into midfield. Other than that it was a disappointing display against a team we are more than capable of beating.
On the whole the first half of the season has been very good. Unfortunately just as we had started to play well the weather intervened and the enforced layoff seemed to knock us out of our stride. The girls are all improving but we must all work a bit harder to ensure we become more competitive in the second half of the season.
