Hard fought victory

Haslemere secured another three points despite a determined fightback by the home team.
Haslemere started the game in a confident manner and passed the ball well. Georgia playing upfront closed down the opposition defence at every opportunity and this allowed the midfield to take control of the game. Georgia & Cara made some telling runs and put in a few good crosses but the finishing was a bit wayward . The deadlock was finally broken when Georgia slotted home following a good move, her first goal of the season. Haslemere were in total control and should have been more than 1 goal to the good. Suddenly out of the blue Staines equalized when a quick throw caught out the defence and the Staines forward was left with a simple one on one. The half time score flattered the home team and Haslemere were left to rue their missed chances.
The second half was a complete turnaround as Haslemere continually gave the ball away and lacked the spark that was so much in evidence in the first half. Staines piled on the pressure and a mixture of stout defending, good luck and fine goalkeeping kept the scores level. Midway through the half Haslemere hit a purple patch and Emine finished off one the the three good chances created and Haslemere's lead was restored.
The remainder of the game was played out in Haslemere's half but Staines couldn't get past a resolute defence with Cara, standing in for then injured Anna, making some excellent interceptions.
Although the second half performance didn't match the excellent play of the first half it was a battling display and Haslemere deserved to win. With a bit more consistency and composure on the ball we will be a very hard team to beat.
