Morale boosting win
By Albert Hall
This was far from our best performance of the season but the win gives the girls a much needed boost.
Haslemere came out on top against the bottom side but had to work hard for their victory. Brooklands started brightly and playing with the wind behind them kept Haslemere pinned in their own half for long spells. In truth Haslemere seemed to be lacking in desire and consequently lost most of the 50-50 challenges and failed to exert any pressure of their own. Captain Anna again led by example and constantly thwarted the home team attack. Haslemere did create a couple of chances but they were happy to still be level at the interval.
With the coaches half time words ringing in their ears the girls picked up the pace in the second half and started putting some good moves together. Cara and Lily came to life and started to take control of the midfield. Cara then dispossessed a home team defender, with a slightly suspect barge, and crossed to leave Ellen a simple tap in, her first ever goal for Haslemere. Brooklands were still posing a slight threat but some fine defending kept them at bay. Lily then scored a fine individual goal, her first for the team, by forcing her way past two defenders and following up her initial shot to slot home a second and decisive goal. Haslemere could have added a couple more goals but Brooklands can count themselves unfortunate not to have got more out of the game.
Lily having shifted into midfield certainly made a case for staying there with a very impressive second half performance. Well done to her & Ellen for scoring their first goals for Haslemere. All the girls put in a good shift in the second half and need to find that level every week. The effort the girls have put into training the last few weeks is also paying off. Well Done to everyone.
