Girls go down fighting

Despite only having 8 players against 9 the scoreline was harsh on unlucky Haslemere

Due to injury and other commitments Haslemere could only field 8 players. To their credit Beecholme did the honorable thing and played with 9 (sarcasm intended). Haslemere started brightly and tried to take the game to their opponents with some nice passing but couldn't penetrate the home defence. Most of the play was concentrated in midfield although Lily did manage to make some telling runs but couldn't seem to make the final shot or pass. The Beecholme forwards put Haslemere under a bit of pressure but Cara, Izzy & Zoe held firm. The deadlock was broken in bizarre circumstances when Maisy ran out of goal to clear but totally missed her kick leaving a simple tap in. Haslemere continued to play a pressing game and caused a few scares but luck was not on their side. In attempting to block a shot the ball took a deflection causing it to evade Maisy's outstretched hand, 2 - 0. Emine had a chance to pull a goal back but couldn't quite get the ball out from under her feet and the opportunity was lost. Beecholme went straight back up the field and from the resulting corner Haslemere gave away a silly penalty, 3 - 0. At this stage Beecholme were well on top and engineered a fine fourth goal finished in style from just inside the box. Despite having played well Haslemere found themselves 4 down at the break.

Haslemere could easily have folded in the second half but to their credit the girls kept trying to play football and more than matched Beecholme. Midway through the half the midfield began to tire, not surprising given the work they had put in, and Beecholme started to put the defence under pressure. Maisy was called upon to make a couple of smart saves to keep the score down. Lily, Emine, Emily & Ellen found a bit of energy and started to find gaps in the home team defence forcing the keeper to get her hands dirty. Lily then made one of her mazy runs and scored a deserved goal. Emine went close and Lily also had another couple of shots. The game ended in a 4 - 1 defeat which was a bit harsh but we did win the second half 1 - 0.

Although defeated this performance was every bit as good as the previous two games which we won. Ellen & Emily have started to show real promise. Zoe out of position stuck to her task and had a great second half. Emine worked hard defensively. Lily had a storming match. Maisy made crucial saves to keep the score down. Izzy, without the burden of captaincy, played even better than last week. Cara was Cara fierce tackling, non stop and as we found out today a great organiser.
